Introduction to RICS - a global professional organization

RICS, or the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, is a global professional organization that sets and aims to promote and enforce the highest international standards in the valuation, management and development of land, property, construction and infrastructure.


The history of RICS - from its founding to today


RICS was founded in London, England, as an institution for surveyors after a meeting of 49 surveyors at the Westminster Palace Hotel on June 15, 1868. RICS operates at a full government level and has since grown to become a leading organization in its field, with over 134,000 members working in over 150 countries around the world. The organization's headquarters were located at the corner of Great George Street and Little George. RICS was granted a royal charter on August 26, 1881, by Queen Victoria, making it the first professional body in the world of surveyors to receive a royal charter, and in 1947 became the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

RICS mission - Promoting and enforcing international standards

RICS is dedicated to promoting and enforcing the highest international standards in the assessment, management, and development of land, real estate, construction, and infrastructure, and does so by 

Establishing standards: RICS develops and enforces standards for professionals in its fields, designed to ensure that professionals work at the highest levels of professionalism and integrity.

Providing education and training: RICS offers a range of education and training programs to help professionals develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their careers. These programs range from undergraduate and graduate courses to professional development courses and online training modules.

Regulating professionals: RICS regulates its members to ensure their compliance with the highest ethical and professional standards, including monitoring their conduct, investigating complaints, and taking disciplinary action when necessary.

Promoting research and thought leadership: RICS promotes research and thought leadership in its fields, publishing reports, articles, and other materials to share ideas and best practices with its members and the wider industry.

 

RICS Members - Chartered Surveyors and other Built Environment Experts

RICS Members include Chartered Surveyors, property specialists, and other experts in the built environment, including property valuation, building surveying, project management, and property management.


In addition, RICS Members adhere to a strict code of conduct that requires them to work with integrity, objectivity, and professionalism.

In general, RICS plays an important role in shaping the standards and practices of the land, property, construction, and infrastructure sectors, and in ensuring that professionals in these industries work to the highest levels of professionalism and integrity.
